San Francisco Bay Area lawyer news: CHP to probe injuries in Highway 1 SUV rollover crash

/// 04/13/2010

San francisco suv accident lawyer report: – Santa Cruz County, CA—A sport utility vehicle became involved in a violent single-vehicle accident on Monday, March 29, 2010, causing a motorist and five passengers, including four children, to suffer injuries ranging from minor to serious. The SUV rollover occurred in Aptos, California on the northbound California State Route 1 on-ramp at Freedom Boulevard. The impact of the wreck apparently caused an unrestrained female passenger to be ejected from the vehicle, where she was subsequently struck and dragged by a passing car, traveling in the fast lane of the highway, according to information provided by the Mercury News. California Highway Patrol (CHP) authorities are reportedly conducting a full investigation into what factors may have contributed to the SUV crash.

According to state highway patrol troopers, a Watsonville man, identified as Pete Mendoza III had reportedly been drinking but was not considered legally impaired when he lost control of his Ford Expedition at 4:30 p.m. The SUV allegedly overturned off the on-ramp, ejecting his wife, 26-year-old Norma Edith Garcia-Sumano, from the vehicle where an oncoming Nissan Altima hit her. The vehicle then pulled Garcia-Sumano for 75 to 100 feet, leaving her severely injured. Garcia-Sumano, Mendoza, and four children, whose ages were reported to be 1, 3, 5, and 7, were all seemingly transported to Dominican Hospital by responding emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. All except Garcia-Sumano, who remained listed in serious condition on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, were released from the medical center after doctors and nurses treated them.

Upon conducting preliminary investigations into the motor vehicle accident, CHP officials reportedly found marijuana and several opened beer bottles in the SUV. Reports also noted, “Mendoza is a documented gang member with a local criminal history for violence, drug use and burglary.”  Speed was apparently believed to have been a likely factor in the motor vehicle wreck, though according to CHP officer Hugh Holden, “It’s still to early to tell.” The California highway patrol is expected to look into whether all the children were properly restrained when the SUV rollover wreck occurred. Investigations are ongoing.
