A fuel tanker that was hauling two tanks containing 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel, rolled over for unknown reasons just outside of Roy, Utah in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 17, 2010.
The accident, which occurred on Interstate 15, resulted in a huge fire and massive fuel spill. The Utah Highway Patrol shut down all northbound lanes of I-15 between Riverdale Road and 650 North in Clearfield following the 5:00 a.m. wreck.
It is currently unknown why the semi-truck rolled over. Upon overturning, the fuel tanker caught fire, which responding fire crews were able to extinguish quickly. Thousands of gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the highway, and hazmat crews worked feverishly to pump and clean up the roadway.
There were no reports of major injuries as a result of the wreck. The cause of the trucking accident is currently under investigation by the Utah Highway Patrol.
Although the specific cause of the wreck has not been determined, officials have reason to believe the truck driver may have fell asleep off behind the wheel.
