Addiction rehabilitation News – Celebrity Death Spotlights Need to Embrace Treatment for Addiction

Canada addiction rehabilitation center writes: The recent death of former teen idol Corey Haim sheds light on the need for those battling addictions to consider treatment.

March 11, 2010 – Reports about the recent death of 80s teen idol Corey Haim has put the spotlight on addiction and substance abuse. The cause of Haim’s death has not yet been officially determined; however, the 38-year-old actor has publicly spoken about his long-time battle with addiction, which has led to speculation that substance abuse may have played a role. A recent report regarding Haim’s refusal to accept help from David “Dr. Drew” Pinsky of VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab” reality program, citing he told producers of the show he was not in need of help, helps illustrate the need for those battling addiction to embrace treatment. Canada addiction rehabilitation center Chatsworth Pavilion discusses three myths about substance abuse and addiction that may prevent one, or their families from seeking the help they need.

Addiction Myths

It has been said that the first step to overcoming an addiction is admitting that one has a problem. The following are three myths that often prevent addicts from taking the first step in their road to recovery.

• (Myth) Addicts can stop using when they want to- Addiction is characterized as a disease, and long-term abuse of drugs can change one’s brain making their ability to stop with willpower alone difficult.
• (Myth) Recovery can only begin after one hits rock bottom – Recovery does not have to start after an addict has reached their lowest point. In fact, the earlier there is intervention, the less complicated an addiction may be to treat.
• (Myth) Addicts have to want to quit on their own – Being motivated by the pressure of family, legal intervention, or other factors can be just as effective as self-motivation when overcoming an addiction. Becoming sober helps one gain a better perspective in terms of wanting to be successful with treatment.

These are only some of the myths that can stand in the way of one’s sobriety. Learning the facts about addiction and treatment options is important for success long-term.
