February 23, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Before the earthquake in Haiti, the UN commissioned a plan to spur economic growth in the country by ramping up its garment manufacturing. Now in the earthquake’s aftermath, the international community is pushing hard to expand that plan.
Twenty years ago, the Haitian textile industry employed some 100,000 workers, but that number has shrunk to 25,000. While many industries have suffered in the country, the textiles industry has rebounded to nearly its normal output level.
Yet, the garment manufacturing job is a very low-paying one, and workers are unable to make a decent living on the wages the job provides. The world wants more clothes from Haiti, but what is it willing to pay for them?
