Quebec Parliament Denies Motion to Examine Asbestos Exporting Dangers
February 18, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The Quebec government has denied a motion to create a parliamentary committee aimed at examining the dangers involved with exporting asbestos, according to the Canadian Press.
Parti Quebecois supported the motion of Quebec solidaire’s lone member, Amir Khadir, saying the government shouldn’t dump its social responsibilities onto emerging markets. However, the Liberals, the legislative majority, denied the effort.
Canada has one remaining asbestos mine, which employs 400 people. That one mine, however, yields more than $100 million CAD in exports, with almost all the exports going to developing nations.
