Japan Doubles Solar Capacity in One Year
February 17, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ What a difference a year makes for the solar energy industry in Japan. According to the Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association, solar power capacity rose to 483,960 kilowatts in 2009, more than double the 2008 capacity.
According to the Mainichi Daily News, the growth is credited to national and local support of installing solar power systems and feed-in tariffs, where homeowners can sell their surplus solar energy to the electric grid.
Solar power system shipments reached their previous peak in 2005 before government subsidies for installations were cut, Mainichi Daily News reports. However, the government reinstated subsidies in January 2009 as both an environmental measure and for stimulating the economy.
