Delta, United and Continental to Raise Baggage Fees; Other Price Increases Ahead in 2010
January 14, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ U.S. airlines Delta, United and Continental will raise the cost for a passenger to check a first and second bag, but these are just the beginning of fees passengers will pay this year as airlines shoot for a profitable 2010.
“Ancillary charges,” such as baggage fees, raised more than $2 billion for airlines in Q3 2009. Fees have become so prominent that fees now count for almost $280 of a ticket on flights between the U.S. and Europe.
Last week, five carriers instituted a $20 fuel surcharge on flights between the U.S. and Europe. Analysts say other airlines are expected to jump on the fee bandwagon, with American Airlines and US Airways already pondering an increase in baggage fees.
