After Hack Attack, Google Decides to Stop Censoring Google.cn; May Pull Out of China Completely
January 13, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ – Google says that it and at least 20 other websites were the target of an attack originating in China that was intended to hack into the email accounts of human rights activists.
The attack, which occurred in mid-December, has prompted Google to take a stand in China. The company will no longer censor the content of its site. In fact, according to Internet reports, the “Tank Man” photo taken during the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown was available for viewing on Google.cn as of Wednesday – as were search results for “Dalai Lama.”
Whether by choice or by force, Google may end up shutting down its Chinese operations completely. The company had bent considerably in terms of censorship to crack into the Chinese market, which makes these new steps from the Internet giant a real eye-opener.
