Can European Airports Persuade Governments to Help Foot the Increasing Security Bill?
January 12, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ European airports say they will most likely be unable to absorb security costs related to body scanners and warn the burden of these cost increases will be passed along to the consumer.
Instead of passing the buck to the consumer, Airports Council International Europe is asking governments to subsidize any additional security procedures, including the installation of full-body scanners and the staff training that will go along with the installation.
However, this is likely to be a tough sell as European governments do not contribute to any security funding. Security, however, accounts for 35% of an airport’s operating costs (up 27% since 2001) and 2 out of every 5 employees at an airport hold security-related jobs.
