Daytona Beach, FL–The last weekend of July ended in tragedy for a West Palm Beach woman and her family and friends when she was killed in an air boat crash on Saturday. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) http://www.fwc.com, Callie McKenzie, a 27 year-old Palm Beach County resident was killed when the airboat she was riding on Blue Cypress Lake crashed into another airboat. As reported by the Sun Sentinel, 28 year-old Sean Murphy, another rider on her airboat, was seriously injured when the two boats collided in a narrow channel on the lake. Apparently two teenagers on the other airboat involved in the crash were not injured.
Daytona Beach watercraft accident attorney, Ziffra, reveals carelessness and inattention are the two leading causes of boating accidents in the state of Florida. The FWC confirms the most reported type of boating accident involves the collision with another vessel. In 2005, Florida had 4,969 reported boating accidents with 697 deaths and 3,451 injuries. Accidents from boating activities typically include collisions, capsizing, flooding, or sinking and can be caused by many different factors other than inattention and carelessness. Leading watercraft accident lawyer, Ziffra, is urging all boaters to be mindful of the following harmful behaviors while operating and riding in boats on Florida waters:
- Pay attention, operator inattention is one of the main causes of boating accidents
- Slow down, excessive speed increases the inability of the boat operator to control the vessel leading to increased crashes
- Operator inexperience, take a state and NASBLA-approved boating safety course (Florida requires this course for any boat operator under the age of 21, operating a 10-horsepower or more vessel)
- Do not drink alcohol while operating a vessel or riding as a passenger on a boat. 70% of all fatal boating accidents victims drowned.
