Michigan instant dry milk company recalls product for Salmonella risk.
Detroit, MI–Meijer has participated in a voluntary recall of one type of its Instant Non-fat Dry Milk. Meijer is an American regional hypermarket chain headquartered in Walker, Michigan with locations in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. The recall was issued after the company discovered a possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled products were sent to Meijer by Plainview Milk Products Cooperative. Some of Plainview Milk’s products have recently been recalled due to a Salmonella contamination. Safety regulators with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov announced the recall on July 2, 2009. The FDA is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The agency is primarily responsible for maintaining the safety of dietary supplements, blood products, cosmetics, medical devices, vaccines, foods, and veterinary products.
The following item is subject to the federal recall:
– 10 qt packets of Meijer Instant Non-fat Dry Milk, bearing a UPC code of 00000000-41250-96746-0 and sell-by dates of “FEB0911S” and “FEB1011S”
No illnesses related to the recalled dry milk product have been reported. In rare cases, Salmonella can cause serious, or deadly, infections in children, the elderly, and persons with poor immune systems. Healthy people may experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, bloody diarrhea, and fever. The Kent County firm urges consumers to cease consumption of the recalled milk items. A complete refund is available at any Meijer location. Consumers who believe they are sick due to consumption of the product should seek medical attention immediately. Consumers who have been injured due to the recalled instant non-fat dry milk may be entitled to compensation for their damages.
