Syracuse, NY-Three people tragically died when a wrong way driver struck an oncoming motorist. The triple-fatal crash occurred Friday night, July 10, 2009, according to Newsday.com. Authorities stated Gary L. Foster, 60, of Syracuse entered Route 481 on the wrong ramp in Fulton. The driver began to proceed south in the northbound lane. Reports indicate Foster drove nearly 17 miles before striking an oncoming car. The fatal crash occurred north of the Henry Clay overpass in the town of Clay.

Foster reportedly had a passenger in his vehicle when the accident occurred. The passenger was identified as Jacqueline B. Grove, 82, of Syracuse. The deceased driver of the car Foster hit was identified as Alaina M. Reed, 27, of Baldsville. Foster, his passenger, and the motorist he struck head-on all died at the scene of the tragic wrong-way accident. It is unknown why Foster drove the wrong way for so long without realizing he was traveling in the opposite direction, or why his passenger didn’t make him aware he was driving the wrong way.

New York area authorities say emergency dispatchers received at least a dozen calls stating a driver was traveling the wrong way on the Syracuse-area highway before he slammed into the other motor vehicle. New York accident investigators are currently conducting an investigation.
