Dallas V.A medical malpractice lawyers:A recent governmental study found that half of the military affiliated medical sites, inspected in the research study, did not have adequate policies to screen patients for abuse of prescribed medications before issuing the drugs. The lack of screenings puts veterans and active duty militants at risk for overdoses, as reported by the Associated Press. The negligence of healthcare providers at Veteran’s Affairs Administration medical facilities may lead to unnecessary injuries, including death.
The government mandated study was conducted in the wake of 27-year-old Justin Bailey’s death in 2007. Bailey was a Marine who underwent surgery to address a groin injury he sustained during his tour in Iraq. Reportedly the day before Bailey died, he was prescribed five different medications in 14, 15, and 30-day supplies. In addition, Bailey was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although Bailey was at a Los Angeles treatment facility for his injuries, he had never seen a psychiatrist to deal with his post-traumatic stress disorder. According to Wikipedia http://www.wikipedia.org, PTSD is an anxiety disorder which develops after exposure of traumatic experiences, which threatened or caused physical harm. Baileys post-traumatic stress disorder likely originated from his experiences during his active duty tour in the Iraq war.
In the study, it stated more than 10 percent of patients at the medical facilities were prescribed narcotics in supplies, which would last more than a week. Bailey reportedly was known to abuse prescription medications and illegal drugs.
