Aamir Khan as Sanjay Singhania suffers from the problem of memory loss, the cerebral disorder that makes his memory last for just 15 minutes. It seems that even A R Murdaoss, the director of Ghajini suffered from this very similar problem when deriving the story from Memento because it looks as if he retained just fifteen percent of the real masterpiece and then fabricated rest of it according to his own formulaic sensibilities. Inspired loosely by Memento by Christopher Nolan, Ghajini moves forward and backward in time, as the movie juxtaposes a sparkling romance in past against a spaced-out and brutalized present. These two time frames intermingle interestingly thereby leaving sufficient suspense in order to keep its audiences attentive.
Singhania gets hit on his head that provides him recurring amnesia bouts. He hunts for Pradeep Rawat as Ghajini and in order to remember the target, Sanjay inscribes his initials as well as clues on the body. Also, he pastes the post-it messages in his apartment along with carrying a Polaroid camera in order to click the photos of all those people who are crucial to him.
At its very core, the movie is basically a romance plot culminating into revenge drama. Just externally, the movie is fabricated with syndrome of memory loss that could have been used as the primary highlight. But it is bad that even this memory loss is not justified sensibly in the film’s script. The main flaw that Ghajini faces is the fact that Singhania remembers the sidekicks of Ghajini and then traces it from ‘nowhere’. Every scene of the movie seems as if it is written in order to cover the earlier scene.
In addition, the movie’s length could have been reduced but the music by A R Rahman is simply melodious. Even the songs of the film have been choreographed with the typical flamboyancy of South Indian style. Asin is nice and Jiah is decent. So, it can be said that the movie is a ‘one time watch’, if not a brilliant one.
