Smartphones are becoming more popular as handsets that are more user-friendly and offer features that appeal to consumers hit the market. One of the most popular phones around is the Apple iPhone 3G.
Since Apple unveiled the iPhone 3G, it has gone on to become the most popular smartphone in American and holds 16.6% of the global smartphone market. One major obstacle to the adoption of the iPhone by some users is the fact that it is tied to AT&T as the sole carrier.
The people at Dev-Team say that they have now freed the iPhone 3G from the hands of AT&T so that the handset will work on any carrier. The 3G unlock codenamed yellowsn0w is set to be released on December 31, 2008.
There are a few requirements though, one of which is that the iPhone 3G being unlocked has 2.11.07 baseband or earlier and the unlock requires a jailbroken iPhone. Another big potential drawback is that any update from Apple to the iPhone could break your unlock leaving you to wait until a new version of the unlock is developed to use the iPhone on a carrier other than AT&T.
Dev Team says we have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.
• The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
• This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
• You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware
• The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone. It’ll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC.
• Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you’re at. We’ll have complete directions on New Year’s Eve.
