David Petraeus is the head of the US central command. Keeping the US Pakistan tensions in mind which are mounting he will be visiting Islamabad. The recent missile strikes on Pakistan territory in the northwest have made Washington and Islamabad tense.
After David Petraeus took charge of US operations in the Middle East it has become imperative to explain US actions and attacks to the official ally. David Petraeus visit does not come as a surprise. It is the need of the hour. David Petraeus will be accompanied by
US Assistant secretary of state, Richard Boucher. This is a delicate task as the situation is tense. Petraeus will be meeting Ashfaq Kayani the army chief as well as other senior political leaders.
This visit stresses how important US considers the good will from Pakistan in its fight against terrorism. US feels that the Northwest region in Pakistan is the home of many terrorist groups. The recent bombings by US have been an attack on the terrorists but their activities still go unabated.
This also shows that US is serious about its fight against terrorism. It is determined to carry out the mission. General Petraeus already has a strategy ready which has a regional solution and more outreach to the Taliban.
Mr. Boucher however says it is unlikely there would be talks between Gen Petraeus and the Taliban.”The issue is that both Afghanistan and Pakistan have policies on reconciliation and we have been, and continue to be, willing to support those policies,” he told the BBC.
