It has been found that there are 26 mutations, which can be linked to lung cancer. Some of these are linked to other forms of cancer as well. The research findings have been published in Nature. The cells associated with adenocarcinoma ( a kind of cancer ) have been doubled according to the researchers. There are more than a million deaths due to cancer and 40% are due to adenocarcinoma.
“We think that our study may achieve a real impact on the cure of lung cancer patients,” Dr. Matthew Meyerson of the Broad Institute of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University remarked while talking about it.
The study was conducted after studying 188-lung cancer patients.623 genes were studied and decoded and comparisons were made with healthy normal genes. It was found that there were at least 26 types of genes that changed in tumors. The genes, which were discovered were neurofibromatosis, ataxia telengiectasia, ; retinoblastoma and and adenomatosis polyposis coli or APC. The first one is a gene which cause a rare disorder which is neurological. The ATM is related to leukemia and APC is a kind of colon cancer which is very common.
