Thursday’s “Late Show with David Letterman” saw John McCain appearing to make up with David Letterman. He told Letterman he was sorry for having screwed up the previous month by not appearing for the show due to his focus on the ongoing economic crisis.
This was McCain’s 13th appearance o this show which was a result of Letterman’s persistent mockery of him for the past three weeks which suggested that McCain’s decision to suspend his campaign due to the meltdown in Wall Street was just a political stunt.Need to appear on this show saw the republican presidential nominee taking extra effort to travel from Philadelphia by helicopter due to a weather delay to make it to his long awaited show.
Even as he reached the Ed Sullivan Theater stage, Letterman strode over to welcome him. McCain feigned cowering as Letterman asked him whether he could stay. McCain humorously responded saying yes he could and it depended on how bad it got. McCain also joked that the helmet and flak jacket he had ordered his son from the Marine Corps to FedEx him did not reach on time for the show. All these dramatics follow McCain’s last minute cancellation of his appearance at the Sept.24th show.
Reason given was that he had to rush back to Washington to deal with the sudden developments in the financial crisis. Letterman was irked to find McCain actually staying back in New York and visiting the CBS News which was located just a few blocks away to give an interview to Katie Couric, the anchor.
