Avoid Sending Political E-mails While on the Job

Most of the Americans are looking forward eagerly to the 2008 historic presidential elections. Everyone is discussing various related issues and viewpoints on the candidates with fervor and enthusiasm. Employees in organizations do realize it is not prudent to discuss political issues at work as this is sure to make a few people uncomfortable. However, the implications of political messages being communicated through the internet and e mails are not taken seriously by many.

According to Keith Clouse, an experienced employment lawyer from Dallas who represents corporations and senior executives in matters relating to employment, employees must not use office time or resources to send political messages.
Content of the emails usually include soliciting support for a particular candidate or views and comments on the candidates. Sometimes, these messages are sent in spite of knowing the recipient shares the same thoughts.

E mails which are sent asking for funds are a gross violation of a company’s non work related solicitation policy. Political content which is not work related sent in an email from an office could also be considered ‘inappropriate’.

It is important for employers to seriously look into this issue as the election is coming close. Employees must be warned against sending e mails containing political content or any nature, especially from company accounts. They must also not attach links with e mail signatures or add political slogans in their mails.
Keeping the employees well informed about the company’s e mail policies is the duty of every employer.
