Don LaFontaine Died in Los Angeles

Popularly know as the “king of voiceovers”, Don LaFontaine died of uncertain causes on September 1 in Los Angeles. He was 68 and had given a voiceover to around 350,000 TV commercials and over 5,000 movie trailers. Mr. LaFontaine managed to create the magic of his voice in attracting the moviegoers for more than four decades.

Born in Duluth on August 26, 1940, Donald L. LaFontaine started working in the U.S. Army Band and Chorus at Fort Myer at an early age. Later in the year 1960, he joined a job in the National Recording Studios in New York. He worked with radio producer Floyd L. Peterson, who later made Mr. LaFontaine his business partner.

Editing, writing and producing were his primary duties in the early days of the partnership venture, but later an accidental recording changed the flow of his career. This accidental coincidence dates back to 1964, when Mr. LaFontaine recorded a piece himself because a professional announcer failed to give the desired output. Luckily, the studio was delighted with his performance and he recorded for his first trailer, “Gunfighters of Casa Grande.”

The first recording was followed by a number of voiceovers like “Fatal Attraction”, “Terminator” and “Batman Returns”, along with his favorite “The Elephant Man.”
Last year in an interview he said about the trademark phrase, “We have to rapidly establish the world we are transporting them to.”

The personal life of this well-known performer includes a divorce from Joan Studva. However, presently his survivors consist of his wife Nita Whitaker, who is a singer and actress in Los Angeles. His three children including a daughter from the first wife and two daughters from the second along with a grandchild complete his family.
