Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Tuesday apologized for a controversial photo taken at her home, less than a week after the 36-year-old sparked criticism with a video of her party.
The image circulated by the Finnish media shows two women kissing, lifting their tops to reveal their torsos and covering their breasts with a sign that reads “Finland”.
Marin confirmed Tuesday that the picture was taken at her official residence in Kesaranta after attending a music festival that ran from July 8-10.
“I think the picture is not appropriate, I apologize for that. Such a picture should not have been taken,” Marin told reporters in Helsinki.
Marin said she had “friends” at her apartment at the time “to spend the evening” and “go to the sauna.”
The image was first posted to a TikTok account by a former Miss Finland contestant and social media influencer seen in the photo.
An editorial in the Nordic country’s largest newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, said on Tuesday Marin does not appear to be “in control” and more pictures and videos from her private life could become publicly available.
Marin made global headlines last week when video surfaced showing her dancing and partying with a group of friends and celebrities.
Some comments heard in the video interpreted her as referring to narcotics, something that has been hotly debated on social media and which she staunchly denied.
Spurred on by the controversy, Marin took a drug test Friday to “set aside suspicions.”
Her urine sample was tested for the presence of various drugs. It came back negative.
“The drug test carried out on Prime Minister Sanna Marin on August 19, 2022 did not reveal the presence of drugs,” Marin’s office said Monday, adding that the results were signed by a doctor.
Her dancing in the video has also been criticized by some as inappropriate behavior for a prime minister, while others have defended her right to enjoy a private event with friends.
So far, Marin has had her party’s support, with Antti Lindtman, leader of the Social Democrat Party in the Bundestag, telling the media he sees “no major problem dancing with friends at a private event”.
Marin – who was appointed in 2019 at the age of 34 – had previously faced criticism for hosting parties at her official residence.
In December 2021, she faced widespread criticism after it was revealed that despite Covid-19 she had kept dancing into the wee hours.
