New York, NY – Two off-duty NYPD officers were killed and four female passengers were seriously injured in a one-car accident on the Bronx River Parkway Sunday, May 16, 2010, as reported by The New York Times. The accident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m.
Police identified the two officers as 32-year-old Hoyoung Kim and 25-year-old Edwin Paulino of the 32nd precinct in Harlem. Kim was the driver.
The other passengers were identified as Shirley Torres, 26, Melina Ramirez, 22, Iris Gomez Ramirez, 27, and Jasmine Ramirez, 20. All were reported to be in serious but stable condition at Jacobi Hospital after they were thrown from the vehicle.
The officers were pinned inside the car after the crash, and were pronounced dead at the scene.
At the hospital, the mother of one of the women injured in the crash told reporters her daughter did not know the officers, but accepted an offer to be driven home from a party. She said her daughter described the officers as intoxicated.
The woman’s daughter, Melina Ramirez, suffered a broken leg and back, and was undergoing surgery at the time.
As of Sunday afternoon, it was unknown whether the officers and passengers were wearing seat belts.
Police did not discuss the event in detail, as an investigation is ongoing. They have tentatively labeled the cause of the accident driver inattentiveness. A blood test will be conducted.
