Baltimore, MD – A police officer with the Federal Reserve was attacked in his Elliot City neighborhood by a pit bull that was going after the Yorkie-poo, a Yorkshire terrier-poodle mix, he was walking on Sunday, May 9, 2010, as reported by the Baltimore Sun.
The 11-pound, 17-month-old puppy was euthanized after the incident. The officer, Isaiah Harrison, suffered wounds to his hand that required 45 stitches. Doctors are waiting for the swelling in his hand to go down before they make further decisions on treatment. It is predicted the man will need surgery.
The puppy, named Little Stewie, after the “Family Guy” character, was a neighborhood favorite, according to reports. Harrison was walking him near his home in Woodlands Village at approximately 3 p.m. when the attack occurred.
Harrison reported, “He came from nowhere. I didn’t see him until he was in the street. He was right up on me, and I went to pick up my dog. I thought he was going to stop, but he didn’t stop. He was trying to get my dog, so I put my hand up and he got my hand. I had to let go. I can’t even describe the pain.”
He stated the attack lasted a few minutes before the pit bull owner reached the scene.
The owner of the pit bull surrendered the dog to Animal Control. The three-year-old male will be euthanized after rabies tests are conducted.
Harrison’s wife, Pat, told reporters “This is going to affect his job,” describing the possibility Harrison will be unable to use his hand in his line of work. As a police officer, he shoots with his right hand. She lamented, “They’re going to have to find him a desk job or something.”
