As Americans celebrate our nation’s independence next month, one local shop invites Northwest Houston residents to come see what America is doing today. In July, Ginger Lester and Liz LeCrone, co-owners of Lizzy G’s Fine Gifts in Vintage Park Shopping Center, are showcasing a large range of American-made gifts as evidence of successful artisans and local business.

“Nationally, there is so much talk about the economy and the fate of small businesses. We want to show Houston these wonderful American businesses thriving in the gift and handmade industry,” Lester said. “Many are using the very same skills that were used to build our nation. Glassblowers, metal-smiths, potters, woodworkers, seamstresses, candle-makers are at work today across Texas and America. Many are from families who have passed down their skills from generation to generation. There is a real sense of history and family in these businesses and they deserve our attention.”

One example of American-made artistry in gifts comes from Anna Ruggiero, a wood turner in Charleston, South Carolina. Although Anna has always enjoyed working with her hands, it wasn’t until she inherited her grandfather’s 1948 Shop Smith that she was introduced to woodturning. After taking just one class, she was offered a teaching position and made woodturning her profession. “I strive to make pieces that are beautiful and functional,” she says. “I enjoy spending time in the marshes and maritime forests near my home and am inspired by the patterns and textures in nature.” Her passion shows in her work.

Lizzy G’s invites Houston, Spring, Cypress, Klein, and Tomball residents to support and encourage American artists and small businesses. Weekly in July, Lizzy G’s will hold events offering discounts on various American-made products. At the end of the week, one customer will be selected (by drawing) to receive a free American-made product valued at $100 or more. Details are on their website.

“Come show your support and feel good about what America is doing,“ LeCrone said. “Come see unique American gift creations and hear about the artisans’ stories. These are perfect wedding, graduation and birthday gifts to be cherished.”

Lizzy G’s Fine Gifts is an eclectic gift store offering a broad and diverse range of gift items unique to Northwest Houston. Items include original art, jewelry created by artists who have a story to tell, handmade crosses, lotions and potions, travel pieces, accessories, and beautiful serving dishes. Samples of American-made gifts are shown in the Lizzy G’s website http://www.lizzygsfinegifts.com/ and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/LizzyGs.

When choosing vendors, Lester and LeCrone seek those who give back to the community by supporting such charitable causes as breast cancer awareness, child advocacy and environmental protection. Lizzy G’s Fine Gifts is located in the Vintage Park Shopping Center at Highway 249 and Louetta. The shop is open Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Friday until 7pm. Lizzy G’s offers complimentary giftwrap on all purchases.

The Lizzy G’s logo and a photograph of American-made items are available by email.
