While a one-size-fits-all approach can be useful for products like hats and mittens, the same cannot be said of offerings from the automotive world. Understanding that families have different needs than other car buyers, U.S. News & World Report recently released its 2012 Best Cars for Families Awards. Of the 17 winners, four Fords took top honors, including the 2012 Ford Fusion, Fusion Hybrid, Taurus and Edge.
Now in its second year, the U.S. News Best Cars for Families Awards recognize cars, SUVs and minivans that strike the right balance of family-friendly features like safety, utility and reliability. Last year, three Ford models won out of 19 total winners. This year, nearly one-quarter of 2012 Best Cars for Families winners were vehicles that can be found at Ford dealerships.
“The Ford Taurus, Fusion and Edge all have outstanding reputations for reliability and safety,” said Jeff Klein, general sales manager of Beverly, Massachusetts Ford dealership Thomas Ford. “Families often differ in what they need from a vehicle. Some need more cargo room and others need more passenger space, and Ford has them all covered.”
U.S. News named the 2012 Ford Edge its Best Two Row Midsize SUV for Families, declaring it a great choice for parents with two or three children that carpool frequently or need to transport a pet. The 2012 Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid won Best Affordable Midsize Car for Families and Best Hybrid Car for Families, respectively, with U.S. News praising their expansive trunk space and family-friendly technology. Meanwhile, the 2012 Ford Taurus won thanks to its standard top speed-limiting MyKey system and strong crash-test ratings.
No doubt aided by those family-focused features, Ford Taurus sales were up 19 percent last month compared with January 2011. While the 3,447 Ford Taurus sedans sold in January helped Ford’s overall sales jump 7 percent, it was the Ford Focus that was the real sales leader among the automaker’s cars. January sales of the Focus rose 59.8 percent year over year, contributing to 30 percent of Ford’s total sales growth, more than any other vehicle in the lineup.
Redesigned for the 2012 model year, the Ford Focus has attracted attention for its modern styling, fuel economy and performance specs. Recently named the TheCarConnection’s Best Car to Buy 2012, the Ford Focus can achieve up to 38 mpg on the highway when drivers pair its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with the automatic transmission without SelectShift. Drivers who want even better fuel economy can opt for the Focus SE sedan with the SFE package, which nets drivers up to 40 mpg on the highway.
“Many automakers have been cornered into making their vehicles either visually attractive or fuel-efficient, but the Ford Focus is both,” added Klein. “The 2012 model has an aggressive styling that makes shoppers think of performance more than efficiency, but make no mistake: The Focus will save you a lot of money on gas.”
