Boston, MA – A Somerville police officer received praise on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, after he saved the life of a toddler with a bathroom sink stopper lodged in his throat, as reported by The Boston Channel.
Officer Albert Gee was working a construction detail on Somerville Avenue Tuesday morning when he heard a radio call reporting a baby not breathing on Church Street. Gee then heard Mike Gilmore, the two-year-old’s father, yelling for help.
Gee ran to help and was joined by two other officers and a few construction workers who were at the same project. Gee realized the boy’s airway was obstructed and performed back thrusts to the child. The thrusts dislodged a one-inch diameter sink stopper that was lodged in his throat.
The boy then began to breathe on his own, according to police reports.
Chief Michael Cabral praised all officers and dispatchers who played a role in aiding the child.
Gee will receive the Somerville Police Department’s Life Saving Award for his actions. Gee will also be given a citation on Thursday from Somerville’s Board of Aldermen.
The Chairman of the Board of Aldermen told the press, “Officer Gee embodies what it means to be one of Somerville’s finest… I’m not surprised at all to hear he responded the way he did given the training he’d received and the character of this young man.”
