War in Ukraine: Recent Developments

Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine:

– Erdogan trip “powerful message”: Selenskyj –

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi welcomed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit as a “strong message of support”.

He said in a statement during the meeting in the western city of Lviv that they would discuss grain exports and the crisis at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.

Erdogan, who has close working ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, met with the Russian leader less than two weeks ago in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Erdogan and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, with whom Zelenskyy also met in Lviv, were key brokers last month in a deal under which Moscow and Kyiv allowed grain exports from Ukraine to resume after the Russian invasion blocked key global supplies.

Kyiv said Thursday that a 25th cargo ship carrying grain left Ukraine under the deal.

– “Ensuring the safety” of the nuclear power plant, Zelenskyj demands from the UN –

Zelenskyy is calling on the UN to ensure security at the Zaporizhia power plant, where escalating fighting has stoked fears of a nuclear incident.

“The UN must ensure the security of this strategic object, its demilitarization and complete liberation from Russian troops,” he said in a statement after meeting UN chief Guterres in Lviv.

The Ukrainian head of state also criticized “deliberate” Russian attacks on the plant.

He spoke after the Defense Ministry in Moscow denied using heavy weapons at the power plant in southern Ukraine it has controlled since shortly after its February 24 invasion.

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of shelling Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, raising fears of an accident to rival the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

– At least six dead in strikes in Kharkiv –

Russian attacks hit northeast Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, killing at least six and leaving 25 wounded, a day after Russian bombings killed 13 in the city of the same name.

Kharkiv region head Oleg Synegubov said Moscow forces fired eight rockets from Russian territory around 04:30 (0130 GMT), hitting the entire city.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, has faced sustained Russian shelling since the start of the full-scale invasion of Moscow.

– Hypersonic Weapons to the Kaliningrad Enclave –

Russia deploys three fighter jets equipped with hypersonic missiles to its Kaliningrad exclave on the Baltic Sea coast.

Wedged between EU and NATO members Lithuania and Poland, the heavily militarized Kaliningrad region shares no land border with Russia.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that the three Mig-31i aircraft armed with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles will be “on combat duty around the clock.”

Russian President Putin, who unveiled the Kinzhal missile in 2018, has called it “an ideal weapon” that travels at 10 times the speed of sound, making it extremely difficult for missile defenses to intercept.
