A primate suspect: US monkey dials 911 – Offbeat News – Report by AFR

California police officers rushed to a zoo after an 911 call – only to find it had been placed by a mischievous monkey.

Dispatchers dispatched officers to investigate a possible emergency after receiving a call that dropped the connection Saturday night.

San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s deputies traced the call to the offices of Zoo to You, a conservation park 200 miles (320 kilometers) north of Los Angeles, but could not find anyone in trouble.

Undeterred and determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, they began the investigation.

“Then they all realized… it must have been Route the Capuchin Monkey,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.

“Apparently Route had picked up the zoo’s cell phone…which was in the zoo’s golf cart…which is used to drive around the zoo’s 40-acre grounds.”

Capuchin monkeys are particularly inquisitive creatures who enjoy poking and squeezing objects they pick up.

“And that’s exactly what Route did…it happened to be the right combination of numbers to call us.”
