Trump vs Biden again? The documents scandal makes it more likely

If you think you’ve seen this movie before, it’s because you have – only the second time will be even more nerve-wracking. Yes World: Get ready for Biden vs. Trump 2.

That’s one possible takeaway from the scandal that has embroiled Donald Trump over his alleged hoarding of classified government documents nearly two years after losing re-election to Joe Biden.

If Trump was previously considered likely to announce a 2024 comeback bid, one school of thought is that the FBI search of his Florida home, allowing Trump to portray himself as a martyr, makes that decision almost certain.

“I believed before that he would run — I’m stronger in my faith now,” Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told Fox News.

If Trump runs, so the theory goes, then surely Biden will too. Despite being the oldest man in office at 79, Biden sees ridding the United States of Trump as his historic mission.

And so, after weathering the tense, sometimes nightmarish 2020 election, Americans could do it all again.

This time it would be the other way around – the incumbent, a now 81-year-old Biden, and the challenger, a 78-year-old Trump.

Given Trump’s constant lies that he won the 2020 election and the burning evidence of his role in inciting the January 6 violent attack on Congress, a rematch would be ugly.

“If you think Trump’s campaigns in 2016 and 2020 were evil, you saw nothing,” said American University history professor Allan Lichtman, a leading authority on US presidential elections.

– Good for both sides? –

For practitioners of the dark political arts, the FBI raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort is a groundbreaking moment that ironically could benefit both sides.

For Biden, the logic is obvious.

The biggest name in the Republican Party is on the ropes, facing not only the FBI investigation but also legal cases related to allegations ranging from voter rigging to fraud and rape.

It’s embarrassing for Republicans and stimulating for Biden’s Democrats, who increasingly dream of competing in November’s midterm elections to decide control of Congress, avoid a predicted obliteration, or even claim their own surprise victory.

“Trump is like a steroid shot for Democrats,” Jim Kessler of Democratic think tank Third Way told The Hill.

As the editorial board of the pro-Republican Wall Street Journal says, Republicans “should make the midterms a referendum on Mr. Biden’s first two years. Democrats would prefer to talk about Mr Trump by November – really until the end of time. “

But Trump will also see advantages.

Once again, he dominates the national psyche while his ardent base fuels a new conspiracy theory that is illuminating right-wing social media with calls to arms and threats of Civil War 2.0.

“Donald Trump has more than $100 million in his political war chest. But he has something even more valuable – an active FBI investigation against him,” wrote Richard Lowry, editor of the conservative National Review magazine.

“It brought him back into focus. It made it easy for him to portray himself as a contested victim.”

– Trump’s election, Biden’s strategy –

In a Republican primary, Trump’s political footprint would likely crush its closest rival.

“If Trump wants it at this point, I don’t see how it doesn’t belong to him,” Republican political strategist John Thomas told Politico. “This will be crowning glory.”

And Trump’s entry would also essentially trigger Biden’s decision to follow him — undoing any thoughts he may privately have of stepping aside for a younger figure before 2024.

“Trump is the key enabler of whether or not there’s a rematch,” said Lara Brown, director of the Graduate School of Political Management at George Washington University.

“I believe President Biden is waiting to see if Trump explains, and if he does, I believe he will also explain very quickly thereafter.”

Voters may want neither.

A July NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ poll found that 60 percent said Biden should not run in 2024, and 57 percent said the same about Trump.

Biden opposes Trump. “In the next election, I would be very lucky if the same man ran against me,” Biden said in March.

Though it’s been a difficult year for Biden, in recent months he has turned around his presidency and achieved notable legislative and political gains.

And while Biden remains deeply unpopular, with approval ratings hovering around 40 percent, the improving record in the White House and widespread anger at the Supreme Court’s repeal of national abortion rights leave advisers optimistic.

So while Republicans get lost in Trump dramas, Democrats will focus on questions around the kitchen table, an aide said.

“This is about meeting people where they live and the things that are most important in their lives,” the adviser said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “There’s going to be a lot of stuff that’s going to be in the news, but we’re going to be speaking to people in their lives.”
