Pelosi’s Asian tour is set to kick off under the cloud of Taiwan

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was expected to start her Asia tour on Monday amid diplomatic tensions with China, though it is not yet known if she will stop in Taiwan.

Their reported plans to visit the island have prompted strong warnings from Beijing and even unease in the White House as President Joe Biden seeks to lower the temperature with China.

Beijing regards self-governing Taiwan as its territory – to be conquered one day, if necessary by force – and would see a visit from Pelosi as a provocation.

“The trip will focus on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance in the Indo-Pacific region,” Pelosi’s office said in a statement Sunday, referring to the Asia-Pacific region.

“Our delegation will hold high-level meetings to discuss how we can further advance our common interests and values.”

The statement made no mention of Taiwan.

Pelosi is expected to start the tour in Singapore, where meetings with the Prime Minister and President are on the agenda.

Your itinerary also includes Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.

Her delegation includes House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory Meeks, as well as members of the House Standing Intelligence Committee and the House Armed Services Committee.

– Xi Warning –

The United States maintains a policy of “strategic ambiguity” about whether it would intervene militarily if China invaded Taiwan.

While recognizing Beijing’s claim to the island, it also supports Taiwan’s democratic government.

American officials often make discreet visits to Taiwan to show support, but a Pelosi visit would be better known than any in recent history.

As Speaker of the House of Representatives, she is the third in the US presidential nomination and one of the most powerful politicians in the country.

The last House Speaker to visit was Newt Gingrich in 1997.

Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping had a tense phone call last week that was marred by disagreements over Taiwan.

Xi issued an indirect warning to the United States not to “play with fire” over the island.

The fevered speculation about Pelosi’s Taiwan plans has coincided with a surge in military activity across the region, underscoring the explosive nature of the issue.

US officials have sought to downplay the importance of a Pelosi visit and urged calm on Chinese leaders.

“We have many differences when it comes to Taiwan, but for the past 40+ years, we have managed those differences and done so in a way that has maintained peace and stability and allowed the people of Taiwan to thrive,” said the US secretary told prosecutor Antony Blinken on Friday.

Views in Taiwan were mixed about the prospect of Pelosi’s visit, but officials from both the ruling party and the main opposition said the island should not give in to Chinese pressure.
