Venezuela and Colombia will resume ambassador-level diplomatic ties when left-wing President-elect Gustavo Petro takes office in Bogota on August 7, officials from the South American neighbors said on Thursday.

Relations between the two countries were severed in 2019 after Colombian President Ivan Duque refused to recognize the re-election of his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro.

Duque instead backed opposition leader Juan Guaido’s claim to be Venezuela’s acting president.

Colombia was one of around 60 countries to do so after rejecting Venezuela’s 2018 presidential election, which had been boycotted by the opposition.

Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Carlos Faria received Colombia’s foreign minister-designate Alvaro Leyva in San Cristobal, the capital of the state of Tachira on the border between the two countries.

Leyva read out a statement saying both men had “expressed their desire to move forward with the appointment of ambassadors and diplomatic and consular officials on a working agenda to gradually normalize bilateral relations beginning August 7.”

Petro, Colombia’s first elected left-wing president, announced during the election campaign that he would resume diplomatic relations with Venezuela after taking office.

Embassies and consulates in both countries have been closed and flights between the neighbors have been suspended.

Even the land border between the two countries was closed between 2019 and October 2021.

Maduro regularly accuses Duque of being part of alleged plans to overthrow him, while the conservative president claims his Venezuelan counterpart is harboring Colombian rebels who are conducting attacks on his security forces.

On Thursday, Colombian police claimed a former guerrilla hiding in Venezuela offered more than $1.5 million in reward for Duque’s assassination.
