Trump is campaigning with right-wing precursor Sarah Palin

Former US President Donald Trump campaigned in Alaska on Saturday for Sarah Palin, the northern state’s former governor whose rise many see as a populist precursor to Trump’s anti-elite movement.

The two hot-headed politicians have both been key figures in shifting the Republican Party over the past decade to target the aggrieved working class.

Both have also made unsubstantiated claims that there was widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, at least in the key states Trump lost.

“We didn’t have to worry about that in Alaska because we won,” Trump told the crowd at the stadium.

Palin was catapulted into the limelight when she was chosen by the late Arizona Senator John McCain as his running mate in the 2008 presidential election.

A Christian conservative who leaned heavily on her outsider status, Palin’s rise during the 2008 campaign is widely seen as paving the way for businessman Donald Trump, who will successfully take the White House eight years later.

Their norm-breaking brands stood in direct contrast to former Republican flag-bearers Mitt Romney and McCain, who received a Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously from US President Joe Biden, a Democrat, this week.

Palin, an early supporter of Trump’s 2016 campaign, told the audience that she was drawn to the New Yorker in part because he had supported her when she and her family were the subject of intense media attention.

“He texted me and said, ‘Hold on,'” she said.

Palin, 58, is seeking to succeed Republican Don Young, who died unexpectedly last month after serving in the US House of Representatives for 49 years.

The US midterm elections, in which all 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs, are scheduled for November 8th.

Although Alaska is the largest US state by area, it only has one representative in the House of Representatives due to its sparse population.

Trump has sought to assert his influence in the Republican Party by selectively supporting candidates in the primary, whose winners will come in the midterm elections in November this year.

The former president’s election, which supports nearly all of his unsubstantiated claims of rampant voter fraud in the 2020 election, had mixed success in the Republican primary.

Also speaking at Trump’s Alaska rally was Kelly Tshibaka, who was backed by Trump to unseat Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

Trump called Murkowski, who voted to impeach after the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol, “worse than a Democrat.”
