US parade gunners of July 4 considered second attack

The 21-year-old man arrested in a mass shooting at a July 4 parade in a suburb of Chicago has confessed and admitted he considered a second attack while fleeing, police said on Wednesday.

After fleeing the shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, Robert Crimo drove to nearby Madison, Wisconsin, where he contemplated staging another attack.

“He saw a celebration that was taking place in Madison and he seriously considered using the firearm he had in his vehicle to commit another shooting,” police spokesman Christopher Covelli told reporters.

Prosecutor Ben Dillon said during a bail hearing for Crimo that he voluntarily confessed to police that he carried out the Highland Park shooting that killed seven and injured dozens.

Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered that Crimo, who faces seven counts of first-degree murder, be held without bail and appear for a preliminary hearing on July 28.

Crimo, dressed in a black shirt, appeared via video and listened impassively as prosecutors recounted the details of the shooting.

He was asked by the judge if he had an attorney and replied that he did not. The judge appointed a public defender for him.

Dillon, the prosecutor, said Crimo “issued a voluntary statement confessing his actions”.

Crimo, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, climbed onto a roof overlooking the parade route, he said.

“[He]dressed up as a girl and covered his tattoos in makeup” to hide his identity, Dillon added.

Crimo has several distinctive facial tattoos, including the word “Awake” above his left eyebrow and the number “47” on his temple.

– History of mental health problems –

Dillon said Crimo emptied three 30-round magazines from his rifle into the parade crowd before fleeing.

Police said Crimo dropped his rifle in an alley and then drove to Madison in his car, armed with another gun.

He considered attacking a July Fourth celebration there, but “evidence suggests he didn’t come up with enough planning for another attack,” Covelli said.

Crimo returned to the Chicago area and was captured after a brief chase about eight hours after the initial attack.

Covelli said no motive was given for the attack on the Highland Park parade that Crimo had planned for several weeks.

According to police, Crimo has a history of mental health issues and threatening behavior.

Police were called to his home twice in 2019: once to investigate a suicide attempt and the second time because a relative said he threatened to “kill everyone in the family”.

Police confiscated 16 knives, a dagger and a sword from the home but made no arrests.

Crimo, whose father ran unsuccessfully for mayor and owns a deli in Highland Park, was an amateur musician who billed himself as “Awake the Rapper.”

Authorities are investigating online posts and videos by Crimo that contain violent content that alludes to guns and shootings.

A YouTube video posted eight months ago showed cartoons of a gunman and people being shot.

“I just have to do it,” says a voiceover. “It’s my destiny. Everything has led to it. Nothing can stop me, not even myself.”

The shooting is the latest in a spate of gun violence sweeping the United States, which accounts for about 40,000 gun deaths annually, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The controversy over gun control was reignited by two massacres in May, in which 10 black people were shot dead in a New York supermarket and 19 children and two teachers were murdered at a Texas elementary school.
