Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine:
– “Massive shelling” of the city of Donbass –
Russian forces are “massively shelling” the eastern city of Sloviansk, the mayor says, as Moscow pushes deeper into the Donetsk region after capturing neighboring Lugansk over the weekend.
Sloviansk Mayor Vadim Lyakh says the center and north of the city are being bombed and urges residents to seek shelter.
At least six people and 19 injured since Sunday in Sloviansk, one of two major Donetsk cities in Moscow’s tourist attractions, along with Kramatorsk.
Russian forces continue to target the northeastern city of Kharkiv a month after being pushed back from its northern outskirts.
Moscow claims up to 150 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in Russian attacks on the city in the past 24 hours.
– Ukraine, allies agree on ground rules for reconstruction –
Ukraine and its allies agree on a set of principles for rebuilding the war-torn country in the Swiss city of Lugano, including the need to root out corruption and uphold the rule of law.
The former Soviet state has long been ranked by Transparency International as one of the most corrupt countries in the world.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal estimates the cost of reconstruction at $750 billion.
– Ukraine tortures prisoners: Moscow –
Russia says it is investigating the torture of Russian soldiers held captive in Ukraine and recently released in a prisoner exchange.
The Russian investigative committee that investigates serious crimes says one of the 144 Russian soldiers who were replaced last week was linked to being treated by doctors without anesthetics and being “beaten” and “tortured with electricity” in captivity.
The soldier reportedly said he was left without food and water for days. Another soldier who had a leg amputated was quoted as saying he was severely beaten and a Ukrainian medic stabbed his wound.
– NATO begins ratifying offers from Sweden and Finland –
NATO is beginning the process of ratifying Sweden and Finland as the newest members of the 30-strong defense alliance.
“This is a good day for Finland and Sweden and a good day for NATO,” the coalition’s leader Jens Stoltenberg told reporters in a joint statement with the Swedish and Finnish foreign ministers.
“With 32 nations around the table, we will be even stronger and our people even safer as we face the greatest security crisis in decades,” he said.
– Ukrainian wins “Nobel Prize in Mathematics” –
Ukraine’s Maryna Viazovska is only the second woman to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, the Nobel Prize in mathematics.
Viazovska, a 37-year-old mathematics professor from Kyiv who works in the Swiss city of Lausanne, shared the award with three others.
At the ceremony in Helsinki, she paid tribute to Julia Zdanovska, a 21-year-old mathematician who was killed in a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv in March.
“When young people die, you think, ‘What’s the point of teaching if young, talented people are wasted in this terrible war?'” she said.
– Cosmonauts welcome Russian gains –
Russian cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station congratulate Russian forces on their capture of eastern Ukraine’s Lugansk region by being photographed flying the flag of the region’s pro-Russian rebels.
The Russian space agency Roscosmos published the photo in the Telegram news network of Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveyev and Sergei Korsakov holding the flag of the self-proclaimed separatist Lugansk People’s Republic.
