Australian tennis ace Nick Kyrgios will face trial after being charged with assault, his lawyer told the Canberra Times newspaper on Tuesday.

The news broke as the 27-year-old, one of tennis’ most divisive yet exciting figures, geared up to advance to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Police in the Australian Capital Territory, where Canberra is located, released a brief statement Tuesday night without identifying the player.

“ACT Police can confirm that a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to appear in ACT Magistrates Court on August 2 on charges of joint assault following an incident in December 2021,” the statement said.

Barrister Jason Moffett told the Canberra Times his client was aware of the charges.

“It’s in the context of a domestic relationship,” he was quoted as saying.

“The nature of the allegation is serious and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously.”

The lawyer said Kyrgios would not comment as it was a court matter but would release a statement “in due course”.

The world number 40. meets the Chilean Cristian Garin in Wimbledon for a place in the semi-finals.

It will be Kyrgios’ first Slams quarterfinal since the Australian Open in 2015.
