South Africa, a country plagued by electricity shortages, on Tuesday imposed the harshest electricity rationing in two and a half years after labor disputes halted production at several plants.
Electricity rationing for consumers has been ramped up to so-called Level 6 load shedding to prevent nationwide blackouts.
Stage 6 means South Africans will now experience multiple cuts per day, each lasting several hours.
Africa’s leading industrial country last experienced such drastic failures in December 2019.
“There is a high risk that the level of load shedding will have to change at any time depending on the condition of the plant,” energy utility Eskom said in a statement.
Power outages are a major source of frustration and discontent in South Africa, where protests erupted near Eskom’s offices last year.
