Computer programming, coding, and the associated computational thinking (CT) skills and mindset are becoming increasingly important to succeed in today’s academic and professional landscape. As these skills have been recognized in curricular frameworks, there has been increased emphasis on the introduction of coding, starting as early as pre-school and kindergarten. This offers opportunities, but also challenges for early educators and carers of young children. One of the biggest challenges for early childhood educators is introducing coding in a fun, developmentally appropriate way that doesn’t rely heavily on screen time or expensive technology. This is where the Computer Science (CS) Unplugged movement comes in! CS Unplugged encourages the teaching of coding and numeracy through engaging games, puzzles, crafts and more.
Since the launch of the original CS Unplugged activities and website, many schools, educational companies and organizations have adopted the screen-free and unplugged approach and adapted the guiding principles to their environments. Researchers and educators around the world have developed many new unplugged activities, some of which have been shared on the CS Unplugged website, and many others that exist independently in their own websites, books, and curriculum under the term unplugged. In the world of early childhood, the unplugged approach has been embraced as it aligns well with the principles of early learning best practices for hands-on and play-based learning.
