Amazon Gathers Multiple Streaming Platforms to Compete with Disney and Netflix in India

Amazon Prime Video, with over 55 million monthly active subscribers in India, competes in the nation alongside Netflix, Disney’s Hotstar, and Times Internet’s MX Player.

Delhi, India, 09/24/2021 / Delhi News Bureau /

Amazon has introduced Prime Video Channels in India, allowing consumers to subscribe to 8 streaming services, including Discovery+ and Mubi, the latest in a series of initiatives by the US tech behemoth to gain customers in the South Asian country.

According to the firm, the new option makes it easy for consumers to connect and pay for additional streaming services. To sweeten the deal, Amazon said that the services will be accessible at a discount for the first year. Discovery+ is $4 per year, Mubi is $27, Hoichoi is $8.2, DocuBay is $6.8, ErosNow is $4, Lionsgate Play is $9.5, manoramaMax is $9.5, and ShortsTV is $4.

The company, currently embroiled in a number of conflicts in India, did not disclose how much revenue it generates from streaming platforms and from collaborations. Amazon has introduced Prime Video Channels in India, and it’s the 12th country.

The launch on Friday is more likely to benefit third-party streaming partners. All of the partner companies are now striving to establish themselves in the nation. In India, for example, the Discovery+ app had less than 4 million monthly active users last month. Every other app had fewer than one million monthly active users, and several had fewer than 200,000.

“With the launch of Prime Video Channels, we now take the next big step in our journey to entertain India by creating a video entertainment marketplace – first of its kind in India – which will not only delight our customers by giving them even more entertainment choices, but also benefit the OTT Channel partners who collaborate with us to leverage Prime Video’s distribution, reach and tech infrastructure,” Country Manager of Amazon Prime Video India, Gaurav Gandhi, told in a statement.

Amazon Prime Video, with over 55 million monthly active subscribers in India, competes in the nation alongside Netflix, Disney’s Hotstar, and Times Internet’s MX Player. Hotstar and MX Player have built a bigger reach in India than Prime Video, while Netflix has courted the country’s most privileged subscribers.

The e-commerce company has tried to expand its audience by acquiring certain licenses to cricket events. Although a large number of those rights remain with Hotstar.
