Pakistan Zero Carbon Initiative – Pakistan to Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050

Pakistan is expected to attain net-zero carbon by the year 2050.

Islamabad, Pakistan, United States, 09/03/2021 / News Bureau /

While in a round table discussion hosted by Pakistan Environment Trust, the British High Commission, and the Pakistan Textile Council, Malik Amin Aslam, special assistant to the prime minister on climate change, stated that Pakistan had put its faith in natural-based solutions to decrease its carbon footprint.

“Pakistan remains on the front-line of climate impact, and yet our government, under the leadership of PM Imran Khan, is committed to climate action on the ground. We have put our trust in nature-based solutions and clean energy and believe in being part of the solution to climate change instead of adding to the global problem,” he said.

The meeting was conducted to highlight the country’s foremost private firms’ commitment to net-zero carbon emissions at the corporate level. Ten organizations from the textile and FMCG (consumer packaged goods) industries were the first to pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The prime minister’s assistant expressed hope that the bottom-up climate effort towards net-zero driven by the business sector will have a significant impact, thanking the Pakistan Environment Trust for organizing the “trailblazers” for climate action.

“As we prepare for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), all companies can benefit from lowering their CO2 emissions and become part of Pakistan’s leadership on climate change,” said Christian Turner, British High Commissioner to Pakistan. He further said that businesses were critical in combating climate change.

The Net Zero Pakistan representatives stated that they are part of a national collaborative effort to pioneer companies, public institutions, and sectoral experts in accomplishing carbon neutrality for Pakistan by 2050 and would develop a foundation for Pakistan’s corporate companies to boost their sustainability transformation and achieve the net-zero goal.

Dr. Shamshad, a member of the Pakistan Environment Trust and a former governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), stated that as the country’s climatic risks worsened, climate change had become the main concern for everyone.
