As a proud representative and supporter of charitable causes through sustainable tourism, ZARA Tours—currently the No. 1 Kilimanjaro outfitter in Tanzania and one of the largest safari operators in the country—is honored to continue its longtime partnership with Kilimanjaro Orphan Center and support the new KOC “Buy a Brick” build campaign, currently taking place in the Pasua area of Moshi, Tanzania.

Founded in early 2009 by Edward “Teacher” Lazaro, the Kilimanjaro Orphanage Center (KOC) was established to help provide shelter and care to the increasing number of orphans in the Moshi area due to the continuing generational devastation of the HIV epidemic. Through the generous support of advocates such as Zainab Ansel, founder of ZARA Tours, KOC now provides care, shelter, nutrition, safety, healthcare, and long-term education opportunities to over 65 at-risk, orphaned children—ages 3 to 18 years old—as well as a day care program for Pasua families in need.

“In addition to donating a portion of the cost of every climb to local organizations and community outreach programs, such as KOC, it’s not uncommon for ZARA Tours’ climbers, guests and staff to spend extra time and money contributing to these charities,” says Ansel. “With the ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign, now anyone can show their support and be a part of this journey with us.”

With the ever increasing number of orphans in the surrounding areas of Moshi, KOC’s ‘Buy a Brick’ building campaign aims to build a centre with the capacity to care for over 100 more children in an area south of Pasua, providing them with a safe place to live and grow.
