The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement advising that Morocco actively supports the United Arab Emirates in its fight against terrorism and to preserve regional and international peace and stability.
The kingdom, itself a target of internal and international threats of terrorism as it has been specifically mentioned as a target by the same groups operating the Middle East, has taken this decision following royal instructions to protect the country while engaging in the global counterterrorism effort. Morocco’s national interests have dictated that the Kingdom actively fight terrorism and participate in close security cooperation with GCC countries, especially the UAE.
This falls under the long tradition of promoting peace and security that Morocco is so well-known for and which has recently been manifested in Morocco’s staunch anti-terrorism actions, including in Syria and Iraq.
Publicly, Morocco has condemned the Islamic State (known as daesh). Most recently in August 24 when the kingdom “denounced and condemned, in the strongest terms, the despicable terrorist crimes committed by terrorist groups against innocents of all nationalities, religions and professions, including journalists mainly in Iraq and Syria,” adding that “these terrorist acts run counter Islam’s teachings and are a blatant abuse of universal human values.”
At the United Nations level, Morocco also played a leading role at the 5th ministerial meeting of the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF) held September 23 in New York, where US Secretary of State John Kerry hailed Morocco’s leadership in developing “the first global set of good practices on stopping the flow of foreign terrorist fighters,” and at which several new counterterrorism initiatives were announced.
