Former Chivas USA Employees Claim Racial Discrimination in Lawsuit

Former Chivas USA youth coaches say they were fired because they’re not Latino or Mexican, says LA employment lawyer Eric Grover.

Under labor laws it’s illegal to fire employees because of their ethnicity, which is what the plaintiffs claim happened at Chivas USA. “While having a team that reflects its ‘Mexican roots’ may be OK, that doesn’t mean an all Latino staff is required or non-Latino employees, who have done nothing to warrant termination, should find other employment,” says LA employment lawyer Eric Grover.

Two former Chivas USA youth coaches have filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Major League Soccer team, claiming they were fired because they aren’t Mexican or Latino. The suit was filed Tuesday by Daniel Calichman and Theothoros Chronopoulos in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The suit also claims harassment and retaliation based on ethnicity and race and seeks unspecified damages.
