California lawmakers are considering a bill that would give current and former employees the right to inspect and receive copies of their payroll records. This is a bill that must be passed, as it only further protects employees who may be taken advantage of by their employers, says LA employment lawyer Eric Grover. This could be an employees’ first line of defense to make sure they don’t become the victims of wage theft or other wage-related violations by their employer.

A bill that was ratified by a California State Assembly committee earlier this week would firm up an employee’s — or a former employee’s — right to inspect and be given copies of her or his payroll records. The bill, AB 155, was introduced in January by Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville. Following a hearing it was ratified by all five Democrats on the Assembly’s Labor and Employment Committee Wednesday, a spokesperson for Alejo said on Thursday, March 21.
