Finding a truly American-built vehicle can be a tricky task these days. Some cars are assembled stateside without many domestic parts, and others don’t employ as many U.S. workers because they don’t sell very well. According to Cars.com, buyers can avoid those issues with the Toyota Camry, which leads the auto site’s American-Made Index for the fourth-straight year.
Looking at the percentage of domestic parts, final assembly locations and U.S. sales volume, the Cars.com American-Made Index offers a holistic view of each vehicle’s presence in the country. In addition to having a domestic parts content rating of at least 75 percent, a requirement for every model in the index, the 2012 Toyota Camry also benefited from being the best-selling car in America and having assembly plants in Georgetown, Ky. and Lafayette, Ind.
“In today’s global economy, the home country of a nameplate is less significant when it comes to the impact it has on American workers,” said Bill Camastro, general manager of Balise Toyota of Warwick, a Rhode Island Toyota dealer. “Toyota may be a Japanese company, but it has more models on the American-Made Index than any other brand. Meanwhile, some American automakers are using less and less domestic parts to try to improve their profits.”
Toyota went beyond American parts and manufacturing with its all-new 2013 Toyota Avalon, tapping a U.S.-based design team to create the next generation of its premium sedan. Developed by Calty Design Research Inc. in Southern California and Michigan, the new Avalon will feature more aggressive styling when it goes on sale late this year, including a lowered beltline, flared front fenders and a longer, sloping roofline.
Buyers of the 2013 Toyota Avalon will also have the option of choosing the first full hybrid in the premium midsize segment. Delivering a combined city and highway EPA rating of 40 mpg, the Toyota Avalon Hybrid will combine a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a nickel-metal hydride battery pack and a pair of electric motors to produce a total output of 200 horsepower. Those that want the utmost in performance can opt for a standard all-aluminum V6 engine that churns out 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque.
Thanks to American-made vehicles like the Camry and Avalon, the Japanese automaker is doing exceptionally well with U.S. buyers. The brand’s sales were up more than 57 percent in June compared to the same month last year, and year-to-date they have risen more than 29 percent over 2011. Once again, the Camry led the way for Toyota last month, selling 32,107 units in the United States for a 50-percent increase compared to June 2011.
“The popularity of the Toyota brand isn’t just good news for us at dealerships; these positive sales numbers are a boon for the workers at Toyota’s U.S. plants,” added Camastro. “That success also means that more and more U.S. car buyers are benefiting from new rides that are fuel efficient, highly reliable and stylish.”
