02/13/2012 // elisamon2020 // Elisabeth Monaghan

The Arvada Sunrise Rotary is now accepting applications for its 3rd Annual Speak Up! contest and scholarship program. After an application and selection process, eight students from Pomona High School and Arvada High School will be chosen to present their best speeches on April 12, 2012 at the Arvada Center.

The theme for Speak Up! 2012 is “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”, which is also the Rotary International 2012 theme. The scholarship highlights the role of youth in the community, along with the value of education. In addition to incorporating this year’s Rotary theme, competing students must also apply the Four Way Test concepts: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

“One of the Arvada Sunrise Rotary’s goals is to promote community service and strong ethical values to area youth. Through the Speak Up! 2012 scholarship challenge, we offer seniors the opportunity to express their version of their community involvement and reward their efforts with financial aid to promote their higher education,” said club president Susan Hanford.

To be eligible for participation, students must be in their senior year at Pomona High School or Arvada High School, with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Applications are due by February 26. Interviews will be conducted on March 3. The final eight students will present their speeches at the Arvada Center at 6:00 p.m. on April 12. The first place contestant will receive a $3,000 scholarship, second place will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship, and third –through-eighth place participants will receive special gifts.
