Middletown, CT – Two assistant football coaches at Middletown High School were charged with second-degree reckless endangerment after a player collapsed during training Tuesday, July 6, 2010, according to the Hartford Courant.

Police reported they received a call at approximately 7:27 p.m. Tuesday evening, and upon responding, found a group of players were weight training and running in the extreme heat. The strength and conditioning session was cut short when one of the students collapsed while sprinting up a hill.

The name of the boy was not released.

Police reported the temperature at the time was 93 degrees. They also reported no water was provided for the players during training.

The training student was transported to Middlesex Hospital for evaluation and treatment. Further information on his condition was not made available.

Christopher K. Ellis, 26, and Joshua Hamilton, 29, were issued the misdemeanor charges.

Upon running background checks on the two men, police found Hamilton had an outstanding warrant for failure to respond to an infraction.

The school’s athletic director Mike Pitruzello is on vacation and could not be reached for comment, according to the school.

Official football practice is not allowed to start before August 19 if they do not conduct spring practice. For those that do conduct spring practice, the official start date is August 24, according to Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference guidelines.

But, strength and conditioning exercises are allowed to occur over the summer under adult supervision as long as no activities specific to a specific sport takes place.

The school’s head coach resigned in June and has not been replaced yet.
