BP class-action suit: MS man joins class-action suit, claiming business ruined

Lamar County, MS – A Hattiesburg man filed a class-action lawsuit against BP America and the other corporations involved in the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion on April 20. The lawsuit was filed on May 27, 2010, as reported by The Clarion Ledger.

Jacob Shemper claims his business as a charter fishing guide has been severely affected by the spill. Shemper operates off the coast of Louisiana and the Florida Keys. He has been in the industry for 12 years, charging approximately $550 a day for the use of his boat. So far, he has had over 50 days canceled. He explained, “My business is done. I have no business and I’d do anything for this not to be happening.”

The suit will join hundreds of cases against BP and its partners.

Shemper added, “At the end of the day, the litigation in and of itself will never fully compensate or restore anyone to where we were. It will never be completely restored or replenished.”

According to an attorney practicing with the firm representing Shemper, the BP spill will end up being the largest litigation in history. The lawyer said, “In 1989, the Exxon Valdez was one of the biggest litigations to ever hit the country…The BP oil is going to dwarf that 100-fold.”
