Staten Island, NY – A 64-year-old woman was crushed to death after a tractor-trailer rolled over her as she was crossing an intersection on Saturday, June 5, 2010, as reported by Staten Island Live.
Theresa Alonso reportedly picked up a newspaper at a bodega across the street from her retirement community and was on her way back to her apartment just before 9 a.m. She was crossing the intersection of Port Richmond Avenue and Richmond Terrace when the light turned green and a semi drove forward.
Alonso recently had a hip-replacement surgery and walked slowly with a cane. She was only halfway across the busy intersection when the light turned.
The driver of the truck reportedly never saw her. The driver said he called out to the man walking with Alonso, but did not see her because she was in his blind spot. So far, he has not been arrested or given a summons, according to police.
No criminal charges are expected to be filed against the driver either.
Alonso was planning on hosting a party for the residents of the Buckingham House retirement center where she lived that afternoon.
George Bynes, 63, referred to Alonso as his best friend. He told reporters, We’re still going to have the barbecue, but in celebration of her life.”
