Staten Island, NY – Four people, including one firefighter, were hospitalized Sunday, June 6, 2010, after a firetruck collided with an SUV in Staten Island, as reported by Staten Island Live. The crash occurred at a Dongan Hills intersection.
The force of impact between the truck and SUV caused the SUV to roll.
Just before the collision, the FDNY truck was responding to a fire alert that turned out to be a false alarm, according to authorities.
Witnesses nearby reported a Honda CRV was in the process of crossing Hylan Boulevard and Buel Avenue at approximately 1 p.m. Sunday, when the fireturck collided with it. The truck was traveling along Hylan towards Grant City.
Emergency personnel quickly responded to the situation by pulling the driver from the overturned vehicle.
A man who did not see the accident occur, but did see the aftermath, described what he saw, telling reporters, “Within about three seconds, they had that van opened up like it was a can.”
A third vehicle, a green minivan on Buel Avenue, was involved in the accident as well. According to a spokesperson for the FDNY, the injuries sustained from the van collision were minor.
All injured parties were transported to Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Names were not released.
As of Monday, June 7, 2010, officials had not given a cause of the crash.
