Annapollis, MD – Maryland State Police are searching for the driver of a hit-and-run vehicle believed to have struck a highway worker on Route 50 just before 1 a.m., Thursday, June 3, 2010, as reported by WBALTV.com. The worker was killed as a result of the hit.

The victim was identified as 52-year-old Ghassen A. Sabra of Goldsboro, NC. He worked for Sabra, Wang and Associates, Inc., of Halethorpe, MD. The company is under contract with the Maryland State Highway Administration to conduct traffic surveys.

Police believe Sabra was either placing or packing up traffic counting equipment when the vehicle struck him. The collision sent Sabra into another lane, where he was struck a second time by a tractor-trailer.

The semi driver told authorities that he did not see the man until it was too late. Sabra was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sabra was wearing reflective clothing, according to police reports. A light was also activated on top of his pickup truck that was parked on the highway shoulder.

Police are asking anyone who knows about the incident to contact them at (410) 761-5130.

Police will not charge the driver of the tractor-trailer.

Police reported the eastbound lanes of Route 50 were reopened just before 7 a.m.
